Oh – in case you’re wondering whether or not this could be good sci-fi fodder – don’t doubt yourself for long. Tuvan overtone singing, also known as polyphonic singing or throat singing, is a vocal technique that creates two different tones through the resonance created by the airflow of sound through the lungs, throat, and mouth. Strictly a cappella, Polyphonic Singing from Sardinia is an appealing example of the type of traditional vocal-group performing that has been heard on the Italian island of Sardinia for centuries. I’m sure she can make creepy sounds too – that’s just part of the territory – but this woman can also trick you into thinking that maybe you could compose some very beautiful and unique songs featuring this technique. The fundamental pitch may move upwards while the harmonic moves downwards or vice versa. It comes to expression through the partially independent movements between the fundamental and the accentuated harmonics of the voice. That’s cool if you’re looking for scary background music but if you try to make it sound beautiful – well, that’s a different world entirely – a world monopolized by Anna Maria Hefele. Polyphonic Overtone singing may be considered a gem of the universal harmonic language. I’m not embarrassed to tell you that there is a reason only one group of people on the planet sing like this – it’s tough! And, after lots of practice, it still sounds … well, creepy.
